Honey and bee products by Juozas Petrauskas
Beekeeping has been practised in the Lazdijai region since very ancient times, when the Jotvingiai people still lived here and practised forest beekeeping. Nowadays, both amateurs and professionals practise this craft in our region. The honey of the Lazdijai region is special because the region is rich in natural vegetation, open fields, wetlands and forests. The Lazdijai and Seine regions are border areas, with uncultivated and unploughed land along the border, with relatively large areas of uncultivated crops, which makes for a very natural and varied vegetation. The land is not contaminated by herbicides or pesticides, so the honey harvested in this area has invaluable health benefits and a very high content of exceptional beneficial substances. Honey collected in these areas, which has an exceptional taste, is labelled with the EU Protected Designation of Origin ‘Honey from Sejneńszczyzny/Lazdijai Region’ / Miód z Sejneńszczyzny / Loździejszczyzny
“If everyone eats honey, no one will go to pharmacies, no one will buy medicines, pharmacies will have to close”, smiles Juozas Petrauskas, the chairman of the Beekeepers’ Association of Lazdijai District, who has been beekeeping for more than two decades. The beekeeper looks after about 100 bee colonies. He sells not only the well-known honey, but also other bee products: pollen, bee bread, bee pitch (propolis) and beeswax candles. Pollen is designed to boost immunity, bee bread is rich in trace vitamins and propolis has disinfectant properties and is a natural antibiotic.
For those looking for exceptional sensations, we offer bee therapy. You can do so in the apitherapy house of beekeeper Juozas Petrauskas. There are no bees inside the house, but there are two wooden hive beds. Don’t be afraid, no bees can get in through these hives, they fly in through the opening from outside. During the therapy, you need to lie down quietly on the loungers, relax and lie down for at least 15 minutes. The bees buzzing in the hive under the bunks create a vibration that is equivalent to the vibration of a healthy person’s cells, so if you have an out-of-balance body or a health problem, bee therapy is a great way to rebalance your body.
You can buy honey and other bee products at the Lazdijai Tourism Centre, Vilniaus g. 1, or in the e-shop https://www.lazdijai-turizmas.lt/katalogas/bciu-produktai/
